Neck Adjustment by a Chiropractor

About my practice

Precise chiropractic care for:

Children

Working with children is a joy.  Most children love to be adjusted, they're much more connected with the innate, intrinsic sense of something “right” happening.  Also, our recuperative powers are stronger when young and unfortunately diminish with age. Because of this children usually respond very quickly to being adjusted, much faster than adults.  A child may be a little afraid at first but after that they enthusiastically come for their next adjustment.

Chronic Pain Sufferers

The causes of chronic pain are many and varied.  For our purposes I'll limit the discussion to chronic musculoskeletal pain.

Many people live with daily pain needlessly.  Numerous pain syndromes can be effectively treated with conservative methods such as chiropractic.  As we age almost all of us will develop arthritis, and aches and pains from poor postural habits, driving position, sitting position, poor diet, lack of exercise. Over time misalignments cause nerve interference in nerves that supply the muscles.  Concurrently muscles become tight and weak if not exercised.  The combination of these two factors can result in chronic pain syndromes, and not just in the area of the muscle. The musculoskeletal system works as an integrated whole, and if there is weakness or imbalance in one area, it can effect other areas. For example, weak back muscles can causes misalignment in the neck (cervical spine) and lead to chronic headache. Misalignment in the cervical spine compromises nerve flow into the head. The resulting headache is known as cervicogenic headache.

Another example is hip pain.  Patients have come in with chronic hip pain yet x-rays and MRI are normal.  Invariably the cause of the pain are misalignments in the pelvis and lumbar spine (low back) combined with tight leg muscles, and weakness in the pelvic and abdominal muscles. Please see the section on exercise guidance to read more on this topic.

Auto or Work Injured

Working with patients who've been injured requires a light hand.  Looking at yourself from the outside you look fine, but under the skin the tissues and blood vessels have been traumatized, torn, possibly bleeding. Ligaments and tendons of the joints have been damaged and the joints mis-aligned.  Neck injury, for example, and the resulting insult to nerves can cause symptoms such as headache, pain in arms, hands, feet,  heart palpitations, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), blurred vision (the patient must be examined for concussion) shoulder pain, facial pain, vertigo, mid-back pain.  It may seem strange, but in a car accident, the less damage that appears on the car often means the driver and passengers are more injured.  This is because when I car crumples it absorbs the force of collision, sparing the passengers.

Work injuries commonly include repetitive stress injury (RSI).  These can be addressed by improving the ergonomics of the work space and treating the injury with ice, therapeutic exercise, and adjusting the spine and effected joints.

Athletes and Dancers

The rigorous demands athletes and dancers make on their bodies can cause undesirable alterations in joint relationships throughout the body.  This in turn can cause muscle imbalances which can contribute to injury. Through careful assessment of alignment and muscle function Dr. Caplan can help the athlete recuperate and work to mitigate future injury. Read testimonials from dancers.

Skin Problems

Having suffered acne herself as a teen Dr. Caplan is gratified to be able to offer help to people suffering with skin problems.  Dr. Caplan has been able to help patients over the years who have already investigated the medical route to no avail.  Careful assessment of each patient to decipher each one's unique issues and requirements and tailoring a program to address them has yielded success in many cases.
